The Margarita is a perfect balance of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter, made with chilled tequila, lime juice, and Triple Sec or Cointreau served with a salted rim. The Margarita’s origin is a subject of debate, with multiple people claiming to have invented it. One theory is that it was created in 1938 by Carlos “Danny” Herrera for Marjorie King, a customer and aspiring actress who claimed to be allergic to all hard alcohol except tequila. Another contender is Margarita Sames, a Dallas socialite who claimed to have invented the drink in 1948 for her friends, including Tommy Hilton. Despite its unclear origins, the Margarita’s popularity has remained strong over the years.
In the 1950s, the frozen Margarita became popular, with the classic recipe served over shaved ice until Mariano Martinez, a Dallas restaurateur, created a frozen margarita machine.
